Chassis Numbers How to interpret CX VIN numbers All CX VINs are VF7MAxx0012xx3456 VF7 = Citroen MA = CX xx = CX type/model - See bottom of this list for the completish list. I'm open to suggestions for improving. 0012xx3456 is the actual chassis number. - broken down as follows : 00 - I have never seen one start with anything bar 00 12 - seems related to model year, but not definitively. I think it was incremented if they made 10,000 cars in a model year, and incremented for the new model year anyway. xx = as above. repeat of those characters 3456 = actual serial number. Whether (say) 1000 numbers = 1000 cars is not certain. I know they allocated RHD chassis numbers in blocks, but doubt they built them in blocks..... Older CXs (pre approx '80) didn't have VIN numbers but "chassis numbers" in the format 99xx9999 - i.e. to create a VIN number, they just chucked a bit on the front! Some of the apparent strangenesses can probably be explained by spec. details - for e.g. ME/MT and ML/MV break points probably co-incided with the replacement of the C-Matic box with Auto boxes.
